Field Inspection of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Storage Tanks Using Infrared Thermography and Ultrasonic Methods

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is widely used for above-ground storage tanks (ASTs). However, there are currently no guidelines the non-destructive testing (NDT) and evaluation (NDE) of HDPE ASTs. Moreover, feasibility, limitations, challenges using NDT techniques field inspection ASTs have not been well established. This study both infrared thermography (IRT) ultrasonic (UT) Highlighting implementation in field, this determined that: (1) ambient environmental parameters can affect IRT accuracy; (2) an ideal time during day to perform IRT; (3) heating source camera orientation (4) with proper measures taken, a promising method flaw detection Additionally, UT be following detailed investigation quantify size depth defects. The manuscript concludes discussion limitations best practices implementing AST inspections field.
